This 6000 square foot mini-market, directly inspired by the markets, food stands and food halls of Mexico City, aimed to bring the life and vibrance of these three distinct concepts inside it’s four walls. Researching native Mexican markets and food halls and their layouts, we aimed to capture the essence of Mexico City colors and promote the social liveliness and raw market feel.
3 Main bars serving separate cuisines border the main entry. Between these are counter and bar height dining that quickly shift to dining height seating towards the back. The mix of seating, reminiscent of a Mexican food hall, promotes activity of different dining levels for the full market hall ambiance. Floors laid out with custom cement tiles from Guadalajara, subway tiled walls and exposed ceilings, we aimed to capture the experience of eating at a Mercado Roma food station, or a Colonia Roma food stand.
Branding
Our vision for Americado brand was to graphically represent what ‘Americado’ is – a compound of American and Mexican words, locations and distinct styles. We took cues from traditional storefront lettering found down Jefferson Street in Oak Cliff, Dallas or the seafood Markets of Polanco and mixed it with the grit and structure of Texas. We brought in the vibrant colors of Mexico City aguas frescas and paletas de nieve to form what we feel represents the spirit of two diverse and beautiful cultures.
