Using the restaurant name as a starting point for inspiration, we set out to design a space that played off the aesthetics and spatial qualities of a forest. We wanted to incorporate a concept of repetition, pattern and explore a communal dining experience that still felt natural and comfortable.
A wood clad storefront wraps into the interior walls floors and ceilings of the entrance waiting area. A two sided bar separates this area from a communal table gathering space from the waiting area, breaking up the physical and material space. Green leaf pattern textured wallpaper wrap the bar, topped with a clean white thick marble counter. The main space is laid out in five rows of custom wood floor to ceiling tree structures, angled inward and lined down the center by long communal tables. An earthy color palette and direct references to the cedar forest concept, we hoped to bring a warm, communal environment to this Cedar Springs restaurant.
Branding
Working off the concept of an abstracted tree, in line with the Cedar Grove name, physical look of tree branches and their root systems, we created a growing geometrical logo. We balanced the top heavy, large branch-like figure with a scaled down, more dense version of the same lines. Terminating in a perfect arch at both ends and connected by a single vertical line, the icon then becomes a perfect frame for the ‘cedar grove’ logo. When mirrored perfectly the icon can be manipulated into a badge for a branding badge or stamp. This identity aims to be a respectful and clean representation of a simple concept that works together with the spatial and interior design concepts.
